Eugene (Gene) Merten
Class of 1960
Gene was involved in football, basketball, track and baseball. He played in every quarter in every football game, starting every game beginning with his sophomore year as a lineman on offense & defense. He averaged 4 sacks per quarter and was the only freshman to make varsity on the 1956 team, for which he earned a letter. Throughout his career Gene earned numerous awards, including being voted all conference in 1958. He was also homecoming king. Gene (“Mert”) says it was his pleasure to have played with so many wonderful teammates in his 4 years, all of whom he also feels deserve this honor. He is married and has children.
